Element14 has launched an Internet of Things (IoT) design challenge around the idea of creating a cleaner, more breathable world. Sierra Wireless is one of the sponsors, together with Texas Instruments, Cisco System and the Eclipse Foundation.

In October, we have selected the 15 most interesting project ideas, with finalists coming from 11 countries to compete for the prizes. Each finalist has been given a developer kit with sensors, micro-controllers, an AirVantage M2M cloud account and other resources to realize their IoT idea. They should submit their project by Feb 2015.  During the whole challenge period, finalists will share their development status and experience on the challenge’s blog.

Let’s pick a project to take a close look:

Ravi Butani from India, proposed the project « Healthier Living with IoT ». His idea is to build a system to sense and control the air and water quality at home. He will use sensors to control the air quality from the air-conditioner, ventilators and exhaust fan, as well as the TDS level of the drinking water with sensors. The real time sensor data will be sent to AirVantage for storage and pre-processing, before being integrated to his application.

He has recently succeeded to setup his Raspberry Pi B+ to send data to AirVantage by installing an MQTT client. See his blog post with the detailed setup instructions.
