    Radio Module Firmware Image Management

Loading and storing additional radio module firmware (RMFW) enables RMFW image switching. Image switching enables your router to work with different carriers.

Automatic radio module firmware image switching (based on Carrier SIM)

    1. Ensure the router is powered off.
    2. Insert the carrier SIM that you want to image switch to into the desired SIM Card (slot).

      • By default on XR80: SIM Card (slot) 1 maps to the internal radio module and 2 maps to the optional XP cartridge.
      • By default on XR90: SIM Card (slot) 1 maps to XP1 and 2 maps to XP2.
    3. Power the router on.

    4. Log in to AirLink OS.

    5. Go to System > Admin > Radio Module Image Management.

    6. Click an empty row in the Model ID / Firmware Name column and then select the desired carrier (EM9190/TMO, for example). A new row for the selected carrier appears, and the Firmware Configuration and Firmware Version are blank.

      • If you don’t find your desired radio module/carrier combination in the list:
        • Click CREATE and enter the MODULE ID and FIRMWARE NAME.
        • Click CREATE.

    7. Click SAVE.

    8. Update AirLink OS, as described in Updating AirLink OS Software.

The software update will take 1-2 minutes, as indicated by the yellow LED chase pattern. During the update, RMFW images are loaded onto the router, but are not applied to the radio module yet.

The router reboots when the software update is complete. The RMFW image switch occurs during reboot based on the SIM that was inserted in Step 2 above, as indicated by the green LED chase pattern. The update should take about 2-5 minutes, depending on the RMFW version it is updating to.

When the update is complete, you can confirm the RMFW configuration under Status / Monitoring > Radio Module. Check that the FIRMWARE NAME, FIRMWARE CONFIGURATION, and FIRMWARE VERSION have been updated.

Optional: Manual radio module firmware image switching

As a prerequisite, the RMFW image must be loaded on the router. See the steps above.

    1. Ensure the router is powered off.
    2. Insert the carrier SIM that you want to image switch to into the desired SIM Card (slot).

      • By default, the XR80 SIM Card (slot) 1 maps to the internal radio module and slot 2 maps to the optional XP cartridge.
    3. Power the router on.

    4. Go to Hardware Interfaces > Cellular Interfaces.

    5. Under Cellular > NETWORK OPERATOR SWITCHING, click Automatic to switch it to Manual. NOTE: Do not select NETWORK OPERATOR SWITCHING under LPWA. This feature is not supported for LPWA.

    6. Under SELECT NETWORK OPERATOR, select your desired carrier.

    7. Click SAVE.

The Cellular ADAPTER STATUS indicates Initializing and then Updating Firmware within a few seconds, as indicated by the green LED chase pattern. The update should take about 2-5 minutes depending on the RMFW version it is updating to.

When the update is complete, you can confirm the RMFW configuration under Status / Monitoring > Radio Module. Check that the FIRMWARE NAME, FIRMWARE CONFIGURATION, and FIRMWARE VERSION have been updated.
