Dynamic DNS allows an AirLink router’s WAN IP address to be published to a third party DNS service to enable a consistent method for accessing the router’s address. As many routers will have dynamic IP addresses, it is simpler to access the router by domain name (myrouter.domain.com, for example), which can be facilitated using dynamic DNS.
To configure DDNS, go to Networking > WAN Services. The DDNS settings are located under WAN Services.
| SETTING | DESCRIPTION | RANGE |
|---|---|---|
| DDNS ENABLE | Enable or disable the DDNS feature | Enable, Disable (default) |
| DDNS PROVIDER |
Select the DDNS Service provider
|
No-IP (default), Regfish, Dyndns |
| DDNS RETRY COUNT | Number of retries after DDNS records have not been updated with the WAN IP address. The retry interval between DNS queries is 60 seconds. | Range 3 to 30 (5 default) |
To configure a DDNS Host:
| SETTING | DESCRIPTION | RANGE |
|---|---|---|
| NAME | Name for the DDNS Host | n/a |
| INTERFACE | Select the WAN interface for which DDNS will report the IP address | n/a (Interfaces will vary with your router model) |
| HOSTNAME |
Enter the hostname as an FQDN. You can configure one hostname per entry.
|
n/a |
| IP VERSION |
Select the IP version to be updated by the DDNS provider. Note that this configuration should match the DDNS provider configuration. The interface should also have the valid IP present.
|
IPv4, IPv6, Both |
| USERNAME | User name for your Hostname (for No-IP) or DDNS provider (for other providers). | n/a |
| PASSWORD |
Password for your Hostname (for No-IP) or DDNS provider (for other providers).
|
n/a |
Using a third party dynamic DNS service requires an account with the third party service.
Note that if the router has a NATed WAN IP address, the domain name will reference the network device performing NAT.
Using a Dynamic DNS service does not change the router’s Internet accessibility. If the router cannot be accessed remotely using the WAN IP address, it cannot be accessed using the associated FQDN.
The DDNS Status depends on dnslookup. DNS propagation time for each provider can be different, and even after a successful update, the status sometimes appears as “Update sent to provider. Internal DNS lookup indicates address not yet updated”. If periodic update is enabled, and the resolved Hostname IP address matches the configured interface IP address, the status changes to “OK” after 60 seconds.
Please note that DDNS providers limit the number of IP address updates over a period of time.
